Mary de Flaun, Ph.D.

Primary Disciplines:
Microbiology, Environmental Sciences

Dr. Mary de Flaun, principal environmental scientist based in New Jersey, is highly experienced in the development and implementation of in situ remediation technologies.

Practice Specialties
Dr. de Flaun has 20 years of practical experience bringing in situ remediation technologies addressing recalcitrant organics and metals from bench/pilot scale applications to practical field applications.  She has applied technologies such as biostimulation and bioaugmentation to impacted soil and groundwater at locations throughout the eastern United States, including six CERCLA-regulated sites.  Her work on in situ groundwater remediation technologies and the demonstration of Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA) has recently led her  to focus on the emerging issues associated with subsurface vapor intrusion from groundwater.

Advancing the State-of-the-Practice
She continues to advance the state-of-the-practice through her participation in groups such as the Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council’s (ITRC) BioDNAPL group, where she is involved in developing the “Bioremediation of Chlorinated Ethene DNAPL” technical guidance document for state environmental regulators.  Applying her expertise in the degradation of chlorinated organic compounds and heavy metals remediation, she is collaborating with PrincetonUniversity on a U.S. Department of Defense (SERDP) technology demonstration program involving biostimulation for the in situ sequestration of arsenic.  Dr. de Flaun has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy for her work in the Subsurface Science Program, and for her work with the  Natural and Accelerated Bioremediation Research (NABIR) Programs, and by DOE’s Office of Science for her leadership of the field research program on bioaugmentation at Oyster, Virginia.  Dr. de Flaun received the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award from the Research and Development Council of New Jersey for her work on two patents in the degradation of MTBE.

Academic Accomplishments and Recognitions
Dr. de Flaun was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Tufts University Medical School in Boston.  She is an Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Free State in South Africa.
