Willem Villet, Ph.D., is a principal engineer based California with more than 30 years of experience providing strategic planning consulting, advanced geotechnical engineering solutions, and geohazard analyses on infrastructure projects worldwide for industrial clients, particularly those involved in oil and gas exploration, petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing, and minerals extraction and processing
He works primarily as a specialty consultant on the development of appropriate seismic design strategies and design specifications (both structural and geotechnical) for major industrial facilities and particularly earthen structures and foundations located in areas of high seismicity. He has also served as Program Manager, Project Manager for Engineering, Procurement and Construction, and Designer and Resident Engineer on major projects in North and South America, Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Recent consulting assignments include closure of a site involving low and intermediate level radioactive wastes in Malaysia for a major international client and development of a novel site preparation program for a new Caltex grassroots refinery in Thailand. Dr. Villet has substantial experience helping international clients by leading multi-cultural teams involving local recruits and firms, emphasizing technology transfer.
Advancing the State of the Practice
Dr. Villet continues to advance the state of the practice by serving on several professional committees, including the American Petroleum Institute Geotechnical Committee and research task for on foundation system reliability. He is also a member of the Deep Foundations Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is the coauthor of "Reinforcement of Earth Slopes and Embankments" as part of State of the Art Report and Design Guide published by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program.
