Steven M. Fitzwilliam, PE, GE
Primary Disciplines:
Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering
Mr. Fitzwilliam, a senior geotechnical engineer based in California, has more than 17 years consulting experience focused on geotechnical investigations and engineering design for commercial and infrastructure projects as well as geotechnical support for environmental remediation projects. His clients include the electric and gas industries, commercial waste disposal firms, and construction/development firms.
Practice Specialties
Mr. Fitzwilliam specializes in engineering design projects with challenging site conditions, including tieback wall design for temporary shoring, landslide repair, offshore foundations, dam foundations, and deep foundations through a landfill. He also has extensive experience with geotechnical engineering for infrastructure projects, such as new electrical substations, foundations for transmission lines, gas pipeline construction, and bridge foundation design. He provides expertise in tunneling and trenchless technology for underground utility construction as well as installation of drains and wells using horizontal directional drilling for environmental site remediation projects, and has provided technical analysis related to litigation involving trenchless technology and site development over a closed landfill. In addition, his experience includes construction blasting, both review of blast plans for the protection of existing facilities and buildings as well as development of blast guidelines. Mr. Fitzwilliam leads projects involving vapor intrusion protection for occupied structures protecting occupants from volatile organic compounds as well as explosive gases.
Advancing the State-of-the-Practice
Mr. Fitzwilliam continues to advance the state-of-the-practice by his numerous presentations at technical conferences. He serves as an officer of the San Diego section of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and is a past Chairman of the ASCE Geotechnical Group in San Diego. Mr. Fitzwilliam was instrumental in bringing a seismic workshop to San Diego to advance the southern California community’s seismic engineering practice. He has also served on a local geotechnical panel to advance the state-of-the-practice of foundation engineering for electrical transmission lines in the San Diego area.
