Doug Larson, Ph.D., P.E., LSP, is a principal engineer based in Massachusetts, where he manages the firm’s New England operation. He is a Licensed Site Professional (LSP) in Massachusetts with more than 20 years of experience on environmental remediation projects throughout the United States.
Doug’s current technical focus is on the development of remediation systems that manipulate subsurface geochemical conditions to destroy or immobilize contaminants in place. These systems often result in much lower energy consumption and more effective treatment than conventional remediation technologies.
Doug pioneered the full-scale implementation of several innovative site cleanup strategies, including the use of anaerobic biodegradation processes to destroy chlorinated solvents in aerobic aquifers, and the biodegradation of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) in fractured bedrock. He has managed many remedial investigations and feasibility studies under CERCLA regulations and has been the technical lead on projects involving contaminant fate and transport modeling, financial risk analysis, laboratory and field scale pilot testing, and treatment system design.
Doug has designed and managed the implementation of a wide variety of remedial solutions, including bioremediation, chemical oxidation, soil vapor extraction (SVE), multi-phase extraction (MPE), air sparging, in situ thermal treatment, groundwater extraction and treatment, and above-ground management of contaminated soils. He is frequently consulted on brownfields redevelopment projects and projects involving environmental liability transfers. He also supports litigation projects in defense against claims ranging over $1 billion and has provided expert witness testimony related to the design, construction, and operation of environmental remediation systems.
Doug is an instructor for the Princeton Groundwater Remediation Course (http://princeton-groundwater.com). He also has taught at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and lectures regularly at universities and conferences throughout the United States on remediation topics. He has worked on projects at high-profile sites such as the Massachusetts Military Reservation on Cape Cod; the Nuclear Metals Superfund Site in Concord, Massachusetts; and dozens of other Superfund sites throughout the United States.
