Doug Larson, Ph.D., P.E., LSP, is a principal engineer who has worked on the investigation and cleanup of hazardous waste sites since 1985. He is based in Massachusetts, where he manages the firm’s New England branch offices with a combined staff of over 70 engineers and scientists.

Doug has designed and managed the implementation of a wide variety of subsurface remedial solutions, including:

  • bioremediation
  • chemical oxidation
  • in situ thermal treatment
  • soil vapor and multi-phase extraction
  • air sparging
  • physical containment
  • groundwater extraction and treatment
  • monitored natural attenuation

Doug has also helped advance the full-scale implementation of several innovative site cleanup strategies, including the use of anaerobic biodegradation processes to destroy chlorinated solvents in aerobic aquifers, and the biodegradation of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) in fractured bedrock. He has managed many remedial investigations and feasibility studies and has been the technical lead on projects involving contaminant fate and transport modeling, financial risk analysis, and litigation support.

Doug is frequently consulted on Brownfield redevelopment projects and those involving environmental liability transfers. He has supported litigation projects in defense against claims totaling over $1 billion and has provided expert witness testimony related to the design, construction, and operation of environmental remediation systems.

Doug has worked on projects under the control of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and numerous state regulatory agencies, and he is well versed in state and federal regulations governing environmental site work. He is an instructor for the Princeton Groundwater Remediation Course ( He also taught at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and lectures regularly at universities and conferences throughout the United States on remediation topics.
