Geosyntec Announces AFCEE Team Task Order Award for Remedial Process Optimization at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia

Kennesaw, Georgia — Geosyntec Consultants is pleased to announce that ADVENT and Geosyntec were recently awarded a task order under the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment (AFCEE) 4PAE08 contract. Geosyntec and ADVENT will conduct an evaluation of the remedial action effectiveness at the Horse Pasture Site at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia and implement a pilot study of a remedial process optimization (RPO) alternative. ADVENT is a full-service, woman-owned small business specializing in environmental engineering, consulting, and remediation services with a successful track record of performance for federal clients, including the U.S. Air Force. ADVENT and Geosyntec have successfully teamed to provide environmental services to U.S. Air Force installations on other contracts.

The Horse Pasture site is an area that was impacted by historical waste disposal activities and is currently being restored. As a consequence of these disposal practices, the soil and groundwater at the site became impacted with a variety of contaminants, primarily chlorinated solvents. Previously, in accordance with the Corrective Action Plan (CAP), a third party conducted soil remediation by removal and groundwater remediation by In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO). However, after multiple ISCO injections, the data suggest that the site will not achieve groundwater contaminant concentrations below the maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) within a reasonable timeframe.

As part of this task order, the ADVENT/Geosyntec team will continue post-remediation groundwater sampling and reporting. Additionally, the team will perform a detailed evaluation of historic site data and refine the conceptual site model, develop a numeric groundwater model to evaluate natural attenuation mechanisms and potential remedial enhancements, and conduct bench scale testing to evaluate enhanced bioremediation as an RPO option. These efforts will culminate in a comprehensive RPO alternatives evaluation for the site with path forward recommendations. A pilot scale study will be conducted to substantiate the applicability of the selected RPO alternative.

"We are pleased to be working with ADVENT on this project; we know from our previous teaming experiences that our common commitment to client service will aid us in providing world class specialty technical services," comments Jimmy Whitmer, PG, Geosyntec Program Manager. "We have a long working relationship with Robins Air Force Base and are looking forward to applying Geosyntec's private sector "green" experience to this project."
