Rula Deeb, Ph.D. (California) has been invited to give a presentation on PFASs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) at the Water Science and Technology Board Meeting of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in Washington, D.C., on May 17, 2018.
Rula will kick off a full day of invited presentations on PFASs with an overview of environmental issues, both technical and regulatory, associated with the wide use of these compounds at military and industrial facilities. Other speakers include Department of Defense personnel overseeing funding on mitigating PFAS impacts as well as state regulators overseeing clean-up efforts in the absence of Federal standards.
Rula Deeb is a Senior Principal based in Oakland, CA. Her technical expertise includes the cross-media fate and transport of contaminants, and the remediation of complex soil and groundwater sites impacted by non-aqueous phase liquids. Her focus on emerging contaminants has promoted awareness and improved the understanding of the sources, occurrence, fate and transport, and behavior of these compounds (including PFASs, 1,2-3-trichloropropane [1,2,3-TCP], 1,4-dioxane, methyl tertiary butyl ether [MTBE] and other fuel oxygenates, perchlorate, N-nitrosodimethylamine [NDMA], endocrine disrupting chemicals [EDCs], pharmaceuticals and personal care products [PPCPs], and others) in natural and treatment environments. She is heavily engaged in the National Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering program, which brings together emerging engineering leaders from industry, academia and government to discuss pioneering technical work and leading-edge research in various engineering fields and industry sectors.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine are the United States' pre-eminent source of high-quality, objective advice on science, engineering and health matters. The Water Science and Technology Board (WSTB) was established in 1982 to provide a focal point for studies related to water resources accomplished under the aegis of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. The board's objective is to improve the scientific and technological basis for resolving important questions and issues associated with the efficient management and use of water resources.
