Savron's partner, Dr. Jason Gerhard of the University of Western Ontario, received Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Synergy Award for Innovation, in recognition of the outstanding achievements through the partnership and collaboration between a university and a Canadian industry.

The award was for the development of Savron's patented STAR process and its commercial application. Using smouldering to burn away contaminants, STAR technology is a low-cost, low-energy, green solution that completely remediates sites once drenched in toxic waste in a matter of months, instead of over the span of years. Dr. Gerhard has partnered with Savron to apply STAR technology to contaminated sites around the world. Savron is a division of Geosyntec.

Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, presented the award during a ceremony at Rideau Hall on May 1, 2018. Savron's David Major Ph.D., BCES, joined Dr. Gerhard at the event. "It was an honour to represent the entire Savron team that made this award possible," says David. "It speaks to the value of working closely with university researchers to bring new technologies to the field to meet the firm's commitment to provide exceptional solutions to our clients."

Canada's Minister of Science and Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, Kirsty Duncan, spoke to the significance of the winners' contributions. "I applaud these award-winning researchers for their invaluable contributions to science, engineering and industry. Their hard work inspires young minds while advancing research in areas such as computer science, ocean protection and human health. We all stand to benefit from these groundbreaking projects and inventions that help place Canada at the forefront of scientific discovery,"says Duncan.

As a part of the celebration, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a round table discussion with the winners in all the Top Science Award categories.

David Major is a Senior Principal and the Managing Director of Savron based in Ontario with more than 30 years of experience focused on negotiating, managing and directing the development and deployment of cost-effective remediation strategies and technologies for challenging contaminated sites associated with Fortune 500 companies.
