Adrienne Nemura, P.E (Michigan) and Eric Strecker, P.E., BCEE (Oregon) presented at the 2018 Water Research Foundation Conference in Atlanta, Georgia on May 8, 2018.

Geosyntec staff who contributed as co-authors to these efforts are Elizabeth Toot-Levy (Ohio), Marc Leisenring, P.E., Dan Pankani, P.E., and Paul Hobson, P.E. (Oregon).

The latest research addressing the challenges of integrated water management and reuse was presented at the 2018 Water Research Foundation (WRF) Conference to help communities prepare for the future with a comprehensive program offering innovative approaches and creative solutions for managing their water resources.

Adrienne Nemura is a Senior Principal Water Resources Engineer with more than 30 years of experience focused on helping clients identify cost-effective and sustainable solutions to meet their water quality goals. She has worked for more than 40 cities and wastewater utilities and also state and federal regulatory agencies, industrial facilities, airports, attorneys, consulting firms, non-profit organizations, and trade associations.

Eric Strecker is a Senior Principal Water Resources Engineer with more than 30 years of experience focused on the design, monitoring, and evaluation of stormwater best management practices (BMPs) and the development of major project and watershed master plans.

The WRF is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to cooperatively advance the science of water to protect public health and the environment. WRF funds, manages, and publishes research on the technology, operation, and management of drinking water, wastewater, reuse, and stormwater collection, treatment and supply systems.

Description:
This talk described our project with the WRF to research integrated planning for wastewater and stormwater around the U.S. and develop guidance/tools based upon the lessons learned. Geosyntec led this project to develop a toolbox that helps communities manage compliance with water quality regulations in a way that integrates multiple Clean Water Act programs. The project, Users’ Guide for Integrated Planning for Wastewater and Stormwater (SIWM9R14), allows a community to first assess whether an integrated plan is right for their community and then provides case studies and advice on completing an integrated plan. Geosyntec team members included the University of Cincinnati Economics Center, Patricia McGovern Engineers, and Barnes & Thornburg.

Description:
This talk described our work for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) to (1) determine the conditions under which the results of BMP effectiveness studies can be accurately transferred from one geographic area to another, (2) determine a standardized study design as well as standardized protocol for the collection of data so that evaluation study findings are comparable nationally, and (3) investigate the feasibility of establishing a central repository for post-construction stormwater quality research studies to facilitate the exchange of BMP effectiveness information.

The talk also described the next phase of our work which will include partnering with WRF and NCHRP to develop a Transportation Portal for the International BMP Database and with NCHRP to input additional transportation stormwater BMP performance studies into the database and conduct an assessment of performance.

Description:
This presentation provided an overview of the over 20-year project to develop and build the International BMP Database. Geosyntec has been a partner in this effort with Wright Water Engineers along with WRF, American Society of Civil Engineers, Environmental and Water Resources Institute, Federal Highway Administration, American Public Works Association, The Corn Growers, Soy Bean Institute, and others. The Database (www.bmpdatabase.org) is the largest repository of stormwater BMP monitoring performance studies and includes Urban, Agricultural, and Stream Restoration BMP studies. The effort included developed of detailed monitoring and reporting protocols, database development and updates, QA/QC and uploading of BMP studies, periodic assessment of BMP performance, and development of detailed monitoring guidance for both traditional and green infrastructure (LID, GI) BMPs. The resulting information has been extensively used by regulators, municipal and state agencies, private development, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and others to improve BMP design requirements, BMP designs and regulatory requirements.
