Roneet Das and Patricia Varela Presented on Hazard Assessment of Submarine Slides at the Offshore Technology Conference in Texas

Roneet Das and Patricia Varela, Ph.D. (Texas) presented their paper entitled "The Effect of Bayesian Updating in Hazard Assessment of Submarine Slides" at the Offshore Technology Conference 2019 (OTC-2019) in Houston, Texas on May 6 - 9, 2019.

Patricia serves as the Chair and Roneet serves as the Secretary of the Young Professional sub-committee of the Society of Underwater Technology, which was the invited professional organization for OTC-2019.

Roneet is a Senior Staff Professional based in Texas focused on probabilistic risk assessment, onshore and offshore geohazards, and geotechnical IoT systems.

Patricia is a Professional Consultant based in Texas focused on integrated site characterization using geological and geotechnical field surveying techniques to help clients construct subway tunnels, highways, dams, and buildings. Her professional skills include the estimation of soil properties, design of foundations and slope retaining walls, analysis of structural geologic deformation evidence, geophysical interpretation, and geohazard mapping.

The presentation demonstrated the application of the Bayesian framework that integrates a physical slope stability model, prior state of evidence on the geotechnical, geometric, and seismic model parameters, and experimental observations on the in situ undrained shear strength of the sediments to estimate the probability of failure against sliding. The research was conducted under the advice and supervision of Dr. Zenon Medina-Cetina, a faculty member from Texas A&M University.

The paper was presented in a session hosted by the Society for Underwater Technology SUT-US. This session covered the latest topics in research and applications in underwater technology, from probabilistic stratigraphy integration, installation of foundations systems, probabilistic pipeline routing, a review of energy conservation, to a multi-institutional state of the art review on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs).

OTC-2019 brings together energy professionals to exchange ideas and opinions to advance scientific and technical knowledge for offshore resources and environmental matters. This year's conference welcomed 59,200 attendees from more than 100 countries.
