Rula Deeb Inducted into the Berkeley Academy of Distinguished Alumni

Rula Deeb, Ph.D., BCEEM, PMP (California) joins past Geosyntec inductees into the University of California, Berkeley's Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Academy of Distinguished Alumni (Academy). She will join the 2019 class of inductees at the Academy's annual gala event on October 3rd at the University Club on the Berkeley campus. Academy members are Berkeley CEE alumni that are truly noteworthy for their contributions to the profession and to societal well‐being and development, both in the United States and around the globe.

Rula is a Senior Principal Civil and Environmental Consultant based in California with more than 25 years of experience focused on private practice and academia addressing the cross-media fate and transport of contaminants, and the remediation of complex soil and groundwater sites impacted by non-aqueous phase liquids. She earned her doctorate in civil and environmental engineering at Berkeley, where her research focused on substrate interactions during the bioremediation of subsurface sites impacted by gasoline aromatics and oxygenates. In her professional practice, Rula is a national leader in understanding the occurrence, fate and transport, and behavior of emerging contaminants such as PFAS/PFOA, EDCs, and PPCPs in natural and treatment environments. Her induction citation reads "For outstanding leadership as a consulting environmental engineer in advancing the state of the art and practice for remediation of groundwater impacted by emerging contaminants; for her exemplary record of professional service to multiple federal and state organizations; and for more than two decades of collaboration with, and service to, Berkeley CEE."

Other past and present Geosyntec members of the Academy include Rudolph Bonaparte, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, NAE (Georgia), Michael Kavanaugh, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE, and Lelio Mejia, Ph.D., P.E., G.E., and the late Pat Lucia Ph.D., P.E., G.E. (California).

Rudy's citation into the Academy recognized his leadership in the practice and business of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering and in hazardous and low-level radioactive waste management. He also is noted for contributions to the CEE Department as a founding member and former Chair of the CEE Advisory Council, which has established a Student Leadership Endowment and a Student Professional Development and Leadership Certificate Program.

Mike was honored for his leadership in the practice of environmental engineering, particularly in water quality and the remediation of contaminated groundwater and soils. He also is noted for promoting academic-industry collaboration, for his long-time service to the U.S. National Research Council, and for service to the Berkeley CEE Department as a founding member and former Vice Chair of the CEE Advisory Council.

Lelio was honored for his many years of focus on the challenges of dam and levee engineering and as a leading international authority in this field, with emphasis on the seismic design and performance of dam structures.

Pat's citation recognized his many years of practice leadership as a nationally-recognized authority in forensic engineering and risk management as applied to geotechnical and underground construction issues; his business leadership as long-time Board Chairman for Geosyntec; and his long-time support to the Berkeley CEE Department through teaching, lectures, and collaborative relationships with faculty.

The objectives of the Academy are to honor the outstanding professional accomplishments and contributions of CEE alumni, including service to the CEE Department; engage outstanding alumni in the activities of the Department; increase the visibility of the Department to all alumni; present Academy members to students as examples of successful CEE graduates and possible role models for the students' own careers; and further enhance the stature of the Cal CEE Department by shining a light on the many great accomplishments of its graduates.
