The panel addressed the remediation, chemistry, toxicity, and fate and transport of Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) and 1,4-Dioxane.

These emerging contaminants are an increasing concern to stakeholders in areas where these substances have been manufactured and used in industries, including carpet and other textile industries. The southeastern United States contains a number of these compounds due to widespread manufacturing of PFAS in northeast Alabama, and the carpet industry's historical use of these compounds in northwest Georgia. Former textile mills throughout the Carolinas may have also used these materials.

Jason Conder is a nationally recognized expert on Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) and talked about the chemistry, toxicity, and fate and transport of these compounds. Herwig Goldemund talked about the challenges of groundwater and wastewater remediation, especially in high-strength wastewater streams, such as leachate from waste-disposal facilities.

2016 was the 11th annual Georgia Environmental Conference, a large and diverse educational conference with over 700 attendees from environmental industries. The GEC hosted environmental professionals that exchange knowledge and share ideas around environmental concerns in Georgia and across the southeast region.
