Coal Combustion Residuals and Byproducts

Coal has successfully powered electricity generation for more than 100 years. But during the past few decades increasing regulations pertaining to air, water, and the handling, storage, treatment, and disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) has greatly impacted operations at coal-fired facilities.

Geosyntec consults with clients to achieve their goals for new and expanded ash and residuals storage facilities, closure and reuse of existing storage facilities, and the management of leachate, unplanned releases, and groundwater impacts related to coal combustion activities.

During the past 20 years of supporting our electric power generating clients, we have provided comprehensive services from feasibility and siting studies to design and permit applications, construction support services, remediation, closure engineering, and operations consulting. Our CCR management services encompass technically challenging projects related to landfills, ponds, containment dams, groundwater assessment and remediation, and plant wastewater. Our in-plant services include studies to assess the impacts of new regulations; assessments and proposed design alternatives, including those for mechanical process changes; redesign of wastewater treatment facilities; and preparation of National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit applications. We work closely with our clients to assess current and potential future needs and conduct planning and engineering to meet those needs.

We continue to advance the practice through the introduction of technical innovations, research collaborations with industry partners, and contributions to technical publications. The Electric Power Research Institute frequently taps Geosyntec practitioners to author key guidance and research on topics related to coal ash. Additionally, our experience with high-profile ash projects requiring both short-term and long-term strategies was recently recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies with an Engineering Excellence Grand Award for our efforts at the Tennessee Valley Authority's Kingston plant.
