Geosyntec Sponsors Mine Closure Solutions Conference in Brazil
Geosyntec Consultants is pleased to announce that it is a Gold Sponsor for the Mine Closure Solutions 2014 Conference to be held 26 through 30 April in Ouro Preto, Brazil.
This conference reflects the growing desire among South American countries for mine closure planning and sustainable redevelopment practices. Lucas de Melo, Ph.D., P.E., a senior geotechnical engineer based in Maryland, and Victor Damasceno, Ph.D., P.E., a civil engineer based in Florida, will lead Geosyntec's team at the conference.
Dr. Damasceno and James Wang, Ph.D., P.E., a senior practitioner in environmental assessment and remediation engineering and an Associate of the firm based in Maryland, will present their research on the dewatering of industrial clay wastes, sludge, and mine tailings using electrokinetic techniques.
Dr. de Melo will join Ranjiv Gupta, Ph.D., a geotechnical engineer based in Texas, and David Espinoza, Ph.D., P.E., a Principal geotechnical engineer based in Maryland, in presenting a paper on mine closure strategies to optimize capping of spoils and tailing lagoons.
Additionally, Dr. de Melo will be co-teaching a short course with Professor Dirk Van Zyl from the University of British Columbia on mine closure plan development.
Geosyntec's multi-lingual practitioners have supported U.S.-based and indigenous clients in South American for more than a decade. The firm has assisted clients in achieving their goals for sustainable contaminated site assessment and cleanup; environmental planning and management; waste management planning, engineering, and design; and geotechnical and geological analysis, modeling, and engineering. Geosyntec's practitioners also have supported client efforts in the development of "greenfield" sites and designed the environmentally protective closure of facilities prior to divestiture.
