Gary Wealthall, Derek Tomlinson, and Peter Zeeb to Pen LNAPL Handbook
A best-practices illustrated handbook on the subsurface behavior of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) is in development with key chapters being authored by Gary Wealthall (Guelph), Derek Tomlinson (Philadelphia), and Peter Zeeb (Boston — Acton).
The project is funded by Shell Global Solutions UK and is managed by Contaminated Land: Applications in Real Environments (CL:AIRE), an independent, not-for-profit organization established in 1999 to "stimulate the regeneration of contaminated land in the United Kingdom by raising awareness of, and confidence in, practical and sustainable remediation technologies."
This United Kingdom based project is led by editor Bernie Kueper of Queen's University. The publication, Illustrated Handbook of LNAPL Fate and Behavior in the Subsurface, is in development now and is due to be released in September 2012. Once complete, it is intended to be a concise best-practice tool for use in discussions and negotiations regarding LNAPL impacted sites.
The document will support:
- Better conceptual understanding of LNAPLs in the subsurface, on which rationale risk-management strategies can be built
- More effective site characterization and risk prediction
- More sustainable and risk-based management of LNAPL releases
- Better understanding of where and when specific LNAPL remediation techniques should be applied
