Paul Tschirky to Present on Designing for Coastal Resiliency at the International Conference on Coastal Engineering

Paul Tschirky, Ph.D., P.Eng, D.CE (Louisiana) will  present "Living Breakwaters: Designing for Resiliency" at the 36th International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE) 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland July 30-August 3, 2018.

The presentation will discuss the Living Breakwaters Project, a unique design of an offshore breakwater system to promote coastal resilience in Tottenville, Staten Island, New York. It combines physical risk reduction through wave attenuation and erosion prevention functions with ecological enhancement and habitat creation as an integrated part of the design. The breakwaters design includes reef ridges that extend perpendicular from the trunk and gaps between these ridges, "reef streets," that mimic natural systems creating diverse and complex reef habitats including special bio-enhancing concrete tide pool armor units. This presentation explores the modeling and design of these unique coastal engineering and ecological structures.

His coauthors are Pippa Brashear, SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC; Ido Sella, SeArc Ecological Marine Consulting; and Todd Manson, COWI.

Paul is a Senior Principal Coastal Engineer based in Louisiana with more than 20 years of experience in coastal resiliency, restoration, and water management.

The International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE) is the premier coastal engineering conference held biennially under the auspices of the Coastal Engineering Research Council of COPRI. The Local Organizing Committee is responsible for conference planning and organization.

Created in 2000, the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (COPRI) is a semi-autonomous institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the country's oldest national engineering society. COPRI's services are designed to complement ASCE's traditional civil engineering base and attract non-engineering allied professionals who seek to enhance their professional and technical development.
