Rula Deeb, Jason Conder, and Lange Jorstad to Lead CRC CARE Workshops: Technical and Regulatory Issues Resulting from the use of PFAS at Contaminated Sites
Rula Deeb, Ph.D., BCEEM, PMP (California), Jason Conder, Ph.D. (California), and Lange Jorstad, Ph.D. (Sydney, Australia) will be leading a Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CARE) workshop "Technical and regulatory issues resulting from the use of PFAS at contaminated sites" in Sydney, Australia on August 27 from 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. and again in Melbourne, Australia on August 30 from 8:00 to 5:00 p.m.
These one-day workshops will provide an overview of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) sources, chemistry, environmental fate and transport, exposure, toxicology, and regulatory issues. Presenters will emphasize the state of knowledge regarding the characterization, risk management and remediation of PFAS-contaminated sites.
Rula is a Senior Principal Civil and Environmental Engineer based in California with more than 25 years of experience focused on private practice and academia addressing the cross-media fate and transport of contaminants, and the remediation of complex soil and groundwater sites impacted by non-aqueous phase liquids.
Jason is a Senior Scientist based in California with more than 10 years of experience focused on risk assessment and contaminated sediments in contaminated site assessment and management, environmental toxicology, and ecological and human health risk assessment.
Lange is a Principal Hydrogeologist based in Sydney, Australia with more than 20 years of experience in environmental consultancy and postgraduate research in contaminant hydrogeology.
CRC CARE is an independent organization that performs research, develops technologies and provides policy guidance for assessing, cleaning up and preventing contamination of soil, water and air.
Event DetailsPer- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), were released to the environment at many government and commercial facilities in Australia and elsewhere due to historical uses of aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) to extinguish fuel-based fires, as well as other industrial uses. PFAS are persistent in the environment and difficult to remediate, and PFAS exposures and risks can result in regulatory concerns and active management at contaminated sites and in surrounding areas. This presentation will provide an overview of PFAS sources, chemistry, environmental fate and transport, exposure, toxicology, and regulatory issues and occurrence with an emphasis on the state of knowledge regarding the characterization, risk management, and remediation of PFAS-impacted sites.
At the conclusion of the workshop, attendees will have a detailed awareness of the technical and regulatory issues resulting from use of PFAS. To maximize the learning potential of the group, attendees are encouraged to participate in group exercises and share their knowledge and experience. Attendees throughout the workshop will be involved in small group case study exercises using the skills and information obtained during the workshop.
