Patricia Varela Elected Chair of The Society for Underwater Technology United States Young Professionals Committee
Patricia Varela, Ph.D. (Texas) is serving as Chair of The Society for Underwater Technology United States (SUT-US) Young Professionals Committee (YP) until June 2020.
In this role, her duties include calling and chairing meetings, acting as an official spokesperson for the SUT-US YP in all matters, making herself available to all SUT-US YP members, and maintaining communication of presidential activities pertaining to SUT-US YP business with the SUT-US executive board and the general membership.
Patricia's involvement with The Society for Underwater Technology has included helping secure funding for the Student Chapter at Texas A&M University (SUT-TAMU), and teaming with others to form a Young Professionals Committee. The Young Professionals Committee actively contributes to the society and helps students in underwater science and engineering receive grants and scholarships.
Patricia is a Professional Consultant based in Texas with a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering. Her practice is focused on integrated site characterization using geological and geotechnical field surveying techniques to help clients construct subway tunnels, highways, dams, and buildings. Her professional skills include the estimation of soil properties, design of foundations and slope retaining walls, analysis of structural geologic deformation evidence, geophysical interpretation, and geohazard mapping.
