Geosyntec Project and Staff Received the Outstanding Stormwater Research Project Award from California Stormwater Quality Association
Geosyntec's project, International Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) Database, was honored by the California Stormwater Quality Association (CASQA) with the Outstanding Stormwater Research Project Award at CASQA's 14th Annual Conference in Riverside, California on October 16, 2018.
Mark A. Lombos, P.E., California Stormwater Quality Association, Director and CASQA Awards Committee, Chairman notified Geosyntec's Eric Strecker, P.E., BCEE (Oregon) of the award. Eric is one of the Principal Investigators for the project since its inception in 1995.
Continuing a pattern of stormwater practice excellence, Geosyntec has been honored with eight CASQA awards since 2006. Eric and the BMP Database were also honored by ASCE with the Civil Engineering State-of-the-Art Award, American Society of Civil Engineers at an ASCE National Convention in 2003.
For this ongoing project, Geosyntec is partnered with Wright Water Engineers, Inc., the Water Research Foundation, and with cooperating organizations: Environmental & Water Resources Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (EWRI/ASCE), United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UDFCD), and American Public Works Association (APWA). The Award named Eric Strecker and Marc Leisenring of Geosyntec, Jonathon Jones and Jane Clary, of Wright Water Engineers, and Harry Zhang and Jeff Moeller of the Water Research Foundation.
The International Stormwater Best Management Practices Database is a publicly accessible repository for BMP performance, design, and cost information. The overall purpose of the project is to provide scientifically sound information to improve the design, selection and performance of BMPs. Its on-going mission is to continually increase the field monitoring data sets included in the database over time and to periodically report on BMP design vs. performance to assist stormwater professionals in improving BMP selection and design.
Applications of the project include: informing BMP design and selection by public and private entities; informing regulatory development, including numerous TMDL implementation plans and statewide regulatory initiatives; informing development of regional and local stormwater BMP guidance documents; and providing data sets and summary information for research efforts.
Geosyntec Staff have worked with the team to obtain funding and support to develop and then maintain this project for over 20 years. From its original start with 66 Urban BMP Studies, it has grown to over 700 performance studies. In the last 7 years, the overall BMP Database project has been expanded to include agricultural BMPs, stream restoration BMPs, and that National Stormwater Quality Database. The team is currently working on development of a Highway Runoff BMP Database Portal for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program that will be added to the BMP Database website.
The mission of the CASQA Awards Program is to advance the stormwater quality management profession by identifying and recognizing exemplary leadership, outstanding projects, activities, and contributions to the field of stormwater quality management.
The California Stormwater Quality Association (CASQA) is a professional member association dedicated to the advancement of stormwater quality management through collaboration, education, implementation guidance, regulatory review, and scientific assessment. CASQA has been a leader since 1989 when the field of stormwater management was in its infancy. CASQA's membership is comprised of a diverse range of stormwater quality management organizations and individuals, including cities, counties, special districts, industries, and consulting firms throughout the state.
