Geosyntec Project Earns ENR California's Best Project Recognition for 2018 Specialty Construction
Geosyntec's project, Humboldt Bay Power Plant Decommissioning-Caisson Removal, was named one of Engineering News-Record (ENR) California's Best Projects for 2018 Specialty Construction on October 2, 2018.
The project owner was Pacific Gas and Electric Co., the lead design firm was McMillen Jacobs, the general contractor/civil engineer was APTIM, and Geosyntec provided engineering support to APTIM for removal of the caisson.
Pacific Gas and Electric's Humboldt Bay nuclear power plant in Eureka, California was built in the 1960s and was operational until 1983, when functional, safety, and seismic concerns led to a shutdown. The decommissioning process included removing a 4-foot thick concrete cylinder, or reactor caisson, from 80 feet below ground. Geosyntec designed a deep well dewatering system which was required to depressurize and dewater the mixed aquifer system and facilitate caisson removal. The close proximity of the site to the Pacific Ocean presented challenges, but Geosyntec developed a design that met Pacific Gas and Electric's desired schedule and available on-site water treatment capacity.
