Geosyntec and FRx, Inc. Awarded Patent (U.S. 10,471,484) on Equipment and Method for Creating Hydraulic Fractures via Direct Push Technology

On November 12, 2019, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded a patent covering a direct push technology jet injection (DPT-JI) method for emplacing hydraulic fractures for the purposes of treating contaminants in low-permeability geologic matrices.

The technology was developed in a partnership between Geosyntec, FRx Inc., COWI, and the Capital Region of Denmark. Chapman Ross P.E. (Massachusetts) and Neal Durant Ph.D. (Washington, D.C.) are co-inventors of the technology, along with Bill Slack (FRx) and Mads Terkelsen (formerly of the Capital Region of Denmark).

Compared to conventional hydraulic fracturing methods for delivering reactive media to low-permeability matrices, DPT-JI offers a significant improvement in terms of injection control, avoidance of short-circuiting, and speed of implementation. Since its inception, Geosyntec has used this treatment technology at more than 10 sites in the U.S. and Denmark, including sites operated by specialty chemicals manufacturers, waste management companies, universities, and government agencies.
