Geosyntec Project Awarded Grand Prize for AAEES 2020 Excellence in Environmental Engineering & Science

The American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists® (AAEES) has awarded Geosyntec's Harvard University Northwest Corner Project the 2020 Excellence in Environmental Engineering & Science Grand Prize for Environmental Sustainability.

The submission, entitled "Success of an Integrated Approach for Groundwater Clean-up Beneath an Urban University Campus" explained how an innovative and aggressive approach was used beneath public streets, apartment buildings, and a university campus to remove perchloroethylene (PCE) from the subsurface. This approach combined technologies to achieve permanent closure without restrictions in less than 10 years.  The remedy was implemented around ongoing construction and ongoing campus operations resulting in minimal disturbance to students, faculty, the public, and nearby property owners, which was an important outcome for Harvard.

The submission was prepared by Carl Elder, Ph.D., P.E. (Massachusetts) who was also the project engineer. Geosyntec's core project team also included the following:

Carl Elder is a Senior Principal remediation engineer based in Massachusetts focused on selecting, designing, and implementing soil and groundwater remediation systems. His projects typically involve environmental impacts below or adjacent to chemical manufacturing facilities, office complexes, industrial processing sites, raised industrial facilities, and landfills.

AAEES is a not-for-profit 501(c)(6) organization serving the environmental engineering and environmental science professions by providing board certification to those who qualify through experience and testing. The Academy also provides training through workshops and seminars, participates in accrediting universities, publishes a periodical and other reference material, interacts with students and young professionals, sponsors a university lecture series, and rewards outstanding achievements through its international awards program.
