Microconstituents in wastewater are composed of pharmaceuticals and personal care products and endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). This presentation will focus on the issues being evaluated by the pharmaceutical industry to advance its understanding of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) including EDCs and antibiotic/antimicrobial agents, their release in the environment, and some of the source control techniques and wastewater treatment alternatives that are working in practice.
Joseph Cleary is a national leader regarding microconstituents in wastewater, and has more than 40 years of experience in environmental engineering consulting specializing in industrial wastewater treatment and hazardous waste remediation. He has directed projects involving treatability studies, process selection and design, and engineering design and construction, and also provides operation and maintenance services. His clientele for wastewater projects includes many major pharmaceutical, refinery, food and beverage, paper, and electric and gas utility companies. He is a professional engineer in several states and is a board-certified environmental engineer (BCEE) by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.
