Geosyntec Wins Best Case Study Award at GeoVirtual 2020 Conference
Geosyntec's case study on the "Challenges Faced in Portlands Flood Protection and Enabling Infrastructure (PLFPEI) Toronto Project" was selected as the Best Case Study during the GeoVirtual 2020 Conference.
The award-winning case study was co-authored by Geosyntec's Charbel Abi-Nahed (Waterloo), Hannah Chessell (Waterloo), David Drago (Toronto), Jim Hansen (Oak Brook), and Ali Nasseri-Moghaddam (Waterloo). After presenting the case study this past September 16, 2020, Charbel Abi-Nahed was presented with the Best Case Study Award.
The case study focuses on the main challenges faced during the installation of a full depth secant pile wall around the perimeter of the area of Work in the PLFPEI project. The complexity of this project from conception to implementation necessitated the employment of numerous measures and techniques required for adequate construction. More information can be found here.
Charbel is a Staff Professional based in Waterloo with experience providing support for geotechnical engineering tasks, secant pile wall installation, borehole drilling, field supervision, laboratory testing, and reporting of both soil and rock specimens.
Hannah is a hydrogeologist based in Waterloo with experience in hydrogeology, enhanced in situ bioremediation (ESIB) injections, lithology profiling, drilling oversight, preparation of borehole logs, groundwater sample collection, soil sample collection, data management, soil gas probe installation and sampling, and health and safety plans development.
David is a Staff Scientist based in Waterloo with experience conducting groundwater, soil, and soil vapor sampling, asbestos surveys, Phase I site investigations, phase contrast microscopy (PCM) air sampling, and AutoCAD engineering drawings.
Jim is a Project Engineer based in Oak Brook, Illinois with 11 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, seismic hazards and slope stability analysis, foundation design, and retaining walls, pertaining to the investigation, analysis, and design of infrastructure and development projects.
Ali is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer based in Ontario with more than 25 years of professional experience in the areas of geotechnical, dam, and structural engineering. His expertise includes dam engineering, earthquake engineering, risk management for underground structures, slope stability assessment, geotechnical design of tunneling works, and application of geophysics in geotechnical engineering.
GeoVirtual 2020 was the 73rd Canadian Geotechnical Conference put together by the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) and the Calgary Geotechnical Society (CyGS). The theme for the 2020 Conference was Resilience and Innovation.
