Colette Van Straaten is a Project Engineer and Sustainability Specialist based in Colorado focused on environmental engineering, sustainability initiatives, Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) strategy and reporting, and life-cycle water projects.
Colette works with clients to reduce environmental impacts and assess long-term sustainability and ESG strategy using a risk-based approach. Her work has guided clients across the oil and natural gas, mining, utility, investment, insurance, and municipal sectors to integrate sustainability and ESG objectives seamlessly into core business operations on a risk, cost, and liability basis. She is knowledgeable in ESG reporting frameworks, guidelines, standards, including Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG).
A strong oil and natural gas background from in-house engineering experience through a number of departments gives Colette the multidisciplinary and operations knowledge to guide her clients as they navigate issues related to: sustainability initiatives; ESG disclosure and due diligence; environmental management systems; life-cycle water management; water treatment, sourcing, transport, and disposal; and solid waste management. Colette’s clients can thus, develop environmental and sustainability solutions with a broad base of considerations. Her service to interdepartmental teams and experience leading large infrastructure projects through selection, contracting, commissioning, and operation support her clients in her technical, operational, environmental and sustainability risk reviews and evaluations.
Colette serves as liaison between stakeholders dealing with environmental and sustainability initiatives to include regulatory agencies, communities, service companies, contractors, and operations. She currently serves as a member of the Technical Steering Committee for the New Mexico Produced Water Research Consortium. She supports her clients with numerous sustainability and ESG initiatives including: water and waste data mapping; benchmarking; ESG due diligence, disclosure, reporting and metrics evaluations; and materiality assessments. Colette also helps clients create Health, Safety, Environment, Risk, and Sustainability Management Systems (HSER&S) utilizing a risk-based, data approach to integrate operations and corporate management systems.
