Helen Douglas is a Senior Consultant based in New England with more than 25 years of experience focused on the assessment and remediation of aquatic sites with environmentally persistent chemicals.
Helen's experience includes helping clients with remedial investigations (RI), feasibility studies (FS), remedial design, remedial construction activities (RD/RA,) and natural resource damage assessment and restoration (NRDAR). She assists clients in all phases of site management, including planning data collection activities, evaluating, presenting and reporting data, developing and refining conceptual site models (CSM), assessing potential remediation alternatives, and monitoring during and following remedy implementation.
Much of Helen's experience involves work on sites with sediments impacted by PCBs, PAHs, and heavy metals. She has conducted several multi-phase remedial investigations and pre-design investigations for large sediment sites. She has prepared feasibility studies that evaluate dredging and capping alternatives for PCBs and PAHs in sediments and conducted treatability studies at bench and pilot scale to evaluate treatment technologies for PCBs. She has evaluated dredging performance as a remedial technology in addition to evaluating short-term negative impacts, such as impacts to air, water quality, and nuisance impacts to neighboring communities.
Helen also has a strong background in analytical chemistry, including developing sampling and analysis and quality assurance plans that address site-specific media, contaminants, and action levels. She has extensive experience with laboratory analyses for PCBs, dioxins and furans, PAHs, heavy metals, and volatile and semivolatile organic compounds. She has managed investigation and remediation programs involving fixed laboratories, field laboratories, and using field screening procedures. In support of designing and implementing remedial actions, Helen has managed large scale, rapid turnaround field programs for post-remediation confirmatory samples, and air and surface water quality programs to monitor impacts from remediation.
