Julie Konzuk, Ph.D., PEng

Julie Konzuk is a Principal Environmental Engineer based in Canada with more than 10 years of experience focused on working with clients on the application of specialized technologies to remediate groundwater containing recalcitrant compounds.

As a consultant, Julie has directed, managed, or provided specialist technical support for multiple projects ranging from overall strategy development and site investigation to laboratory treatability studies, remedial design and implementation of solutions that incorporate technologies such as enhanced in situ bioremediation and in situ chemical oxidation. Julie's experience has included implementation of remediation programs in subsurface environments ranging from fractured bedrock to sand and silt/clay environments, as well as treatment of contaminants including chlorinated solvents (chlorinated ethenes, ethanes and methanes), dense, non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), perchlorate, nitroaromatics, nitrated and chlorinated benzenes, and chlorofluorinated compounds. For example, she recently completed a site investigation and remediation planning program at a RCRA-regulated site in a Mid-Atlantic state where subsurface conditions included fractured bedrock and contaminants included perchlorate, RDX, HMX, and chlorinated solvents. She also recently completed the design of a full-scale passive bioremediation system at a U.S. Navy installation in California targeting a chlorinated solvent DNAPL source area and 2,000-foot plume.

To advance the state of the practice, Julie has spent several years conducting research into contaminant and groundwater transport behavior in fractured bedrock, including numerical modeling and laboratory studies. She has experience in applying numerical modeling software such as DNAPL3D (numerical software simulating DNAPL transport in fractured rock) and Visual MODFLOWTM for simulating groundwater flow and transport. In partnership with a research team that included representatives from Queen's University, University of Edinburgh, and the United States Navy, she has developed a software tool (DNAPL TEST) that provides a site-specific screening-level analysis of performance of various DNAPL remediation technologies.
