Julie Konzuk is a Senior Principal Engineer based in Ontario with more than 20 years of experience focused on working with clients in Canada, Australia and the United States on developing and implementing cost-effective remedial strategies from the initial site assessment stage, through pre-design testing, pilot-testing, full-scale implementation and site closure.
As a consultant, Julie has experience with remediation projects ranging from overall remedial strategy development, environmental site assessment, remedial design, costing, and implementation, contaminant fate and transport, numerical modelling, and conceptual site model development. Her experience has included implementation of remediation programs in subsurface environments ranging from fractured bedrock to sand and silt/clay environments, as well as cleanup of contaminants including chlorinated solvents, dense and light non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs and LNAPLs), petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, unexploded ordnance and munitions constituents, heavy metals, nitrated and chlorinated benzenes, and chlorofluorinated compounds.
Beyond remedial design and implementation, Julie also has experience with expert support and testimony on remedial costing and future cost liability estimation, application of various forensics and diagnostic tools for source composition/delineation and contaminant attenuation behavior, insurance claims and cost allocations, and third-party review and independent advice.
To advance the state of the practice, Julie has spent several years conducting research into NAPL and groundwater transport behavior in fractured bedrock prior to joining Geosyntec Consultants, as well as two projects completed for the US Department of Defense in which the effectiveness of various in situ DNAPL remediation technologies were critically evaluated. More recently, she has been actively involved with research and development of novel environmental characterization and fingerprinting methods based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), including completion of a SERDP-funded project evaluating the potential application of NMR-based sensors for monitoring groundwater chemistry changes. Julie has conducted short courses and lectures on the application of advanced remediation technologies and environmental site assessment to practitioners and regulators in North America and Australia. Julie is the author or co-author on numerous peer-reviewed technical publications on remedial cost estimating, bioremediation, DNAPL migration in fractured rock and NMR analytical applications.
