Matt Vanderkooy is a Principal Contaminant Hydrogeologist based in Ontario with more than 12 years of experience focused on complex multidisciplinary challenges with a specialization in managing and directing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination investigation and remediation programs. Matt addresses projects in Louisiana, North Carolina, West Virginia, and elsewhere in the United States.

Matt is focused on client environmental contamination challenges, particularly for PFAS. He helps clients investigate PFAS sources, environmental distribution, exposure to human and ecological receptors, and fate and transport in multiple environmental media including air, surface water, stormwater, industrial discharges, private drinking-water wells, groundwater, soil, sediment, wastewater, biosolids, fish, and vegetation. Matt translates investigative findings into insights, strategies, plans, and actions for remediation. Matt has implemented remedies for PFAS in surface water, stormwater, industrial discharges, and groundwater. His strong foundations in chemistry, geochemistry, and earth sciences, together with his distinctive ability to integrate and lead multidisciplinary teams, helps clients address complex and time-sensitive challenges.

A proven innovator, Matt develops new ways for clients and the industry to assess and remediate contaminated sites. For instance, Matt was instrumental in the development of the SiREM passive sampling services for sediment porewater, and developed and led a technology verification program for a pipeline-industry-funded leak detection sensor. Matt was part of a diverse technical team that furthered PFAS knowledge, specifically regarding analytical challenges involving novel PFAS. These insights have led to changes in how certain PFAS analytes are reported interpreted and now remediated. As proof, one of Matt’s projects won the National Groundwater Association’s 2023 Groundwater Remediation Project of the Year Award for Gravity-Powered PFAS Remediation.
