Olga Stewart is a Senior Environmental Engineer based in Alaska with more than 13 years of experience focused on site characterization of contaminated sites; conceptual site model development and refinement; and site cleanup under the requirements of CERCLA, RCRA, and State of Alaska regulations.
Olga uses her practical, field-based experience to bear in developing realistic and appropriate strategies for site characterization and cleanup across Alaska. Her recent work has focused on large-scale site characterization at former WWII and Cold War military facilities including at Atka Island and Great Sitkin Island in the Aleutians, the Aniak White Alice Communications Station, Federal Aviation Administration navigational aid stations, and the Whitter Fuel Depot. She has also compiled and analyzed large historical data sets from several sites on Kodiak Island to assist clients in evaluating current site conditions and the efficacy of remedies. Olga is known for her leadership in applied technology, particularly in providing field teams with electronic field tools to streamline the data collection to reporting process. Over the past several years, she has designed and implemented mobile field tools to allow field teams to make informed decisions on the fly using information at their fingertips, including historical analytical data in an interactive map, long-term monitoring results per well, and the ability to add new data points to an existing map to fill data gaps. Olga has also developed several feasibility studies and treatability studies to identify remedial solutions for sites varying from PCE to metals to petroleum hydrocarbons.
In addition, Olga supports several clients with considering and evaluating risk as a driver for an appropriate remedy. She was an early adopter of the Alaska Hydrocarbon Risk Calculator, which was released in 2008, to evaluate risk associated with bulk hydrocarbons in aliphatic and aromatic fractions. She participated in the Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council’s (ITRC) team on TPH Risk, collaborating with other experts nationwide to develop a guidance document titled “TPH Risk Evaluation at Petroleum-Contaminated Sites”. Recently, she has been conducting a peer review of a new State of Alaska petroleum hydrocarbon risk calculator.
Olga continues to actively conduct on-the-ground field work to utilize the latest technologies in practice and develop strategies for greater optimization and efficiency in field tools, field management, and field methods. She has led a Qualified Sampler Training for the State of Alaska. Her work has led to the advancement of field-to-client data access and transformed the expectations of clients to visualize the work being conducted. She continues to advance the state of the practice by participating in groups such as the ITRC’s Environmental Data Management Best Practices team developing a guidance for the environmental community. Olga is a recognized expert in the Ultra-Violet Optical Screening Tool (UVOST), and regularly provides expertise in interpreting results for high resolution site characterization tools. Her work continues to evolve into high quality mobile survey data, cross sections and 3D visualizations, and effective data storage and transfer between data users.
