Geosyntec is recognized as a leader in helping our clients achieve safe, secure containment of their regulated wastes requiring land disposal. We provide engineering and related services for siting, permitting, design, construction management/quality assurance, environmental monitoring, and closure/post-closure maintenance.

Our solid waste disposal practice provides solutions to our clients' most challenging design and operations issues. These include permitting "greenfield" sites, maximizing disposal capacity at existing sites, designing for sites with complex geological conditions, and working with wastes that have uncommon characteristics. Our technical knowledge related to the design, permitting, and construction of industrial and hazardous waste containment systems has been tapped by most commercial hazardous waste landfill owners and a number of Fortune 500 industrial firms.

Using our vast experience gained at hundreds of facilities around the world and on numerous contract-research projects for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and similar agencies, we develop practical approaches to design and construction challenges associated with liner and cover systems, leachate management, gas management, and geotechnical and earthquake stability. In addition, we apply advanced concepts in geotechnical engineering and ground improvement methods to design foundations for sites that have poor structural characteristics or significant geological hazards.

Notably, we are pioneers in the design of award-winning earth retention systems used at storage facilities to maximize airspace volume within limited property boundaries. From Maine to California, Geosyntec has designed vertical expansions using mechanically stabilized earthen walls to add airspace capacity to landfills while maintaining existing site footprints.

Geosyntec is well versed in the federal regulations (Subtitle C) related to on-site containment of industrial and hazardous waste materials. In the late 1980s, our staff, under contract to the U.S. EPA, helped draft the double-liner regulatory requirements of 40 CFR § 264 and the supporting technical guidance documents. Our technical support for the U.S. EPA in developing technical guidance and performance data for these facilities continues to this day.

Geosyntec has extensive experience designing commercial and industrial hazardous waste landfills, including facilities at the Ciba Specialty Chemicals plant in Macintosh, Alabama, and the Deer Trail (Highway 36) facility in Colorado. For both facilities, we developed designs, permitting documents, construction plans, and construction certifications. Geosyntec also completed design and permitting for a Corrective Action Management Unit (CAMU) in Nevada that will contain more than 2 million cubic yards of industrial wastes generated from the closure of sludge impoundments.

We also recently provided investigation, design, permitting, and construction oversight for an on-site disposal facility (OSDF) to contain wastes consolidated as part of the remediation of a Superfund site in West Virginia. The two-cell, 500,000-cubic yard, Subtitle C-equivalent facility was designed under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act's CAMU rule to provide a cost-effective remedy for the safe on-site disposal of soils, sludges, and miscellaneous debris with a broad range of contaminants, including mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls, and volatile/semi-volatile organic compounds.
