Our geotechnical infrastructure and foundation practitioners focus on difficult and challenging sites where the development of dependable and cost-effective foundations is critical to the success of the project. Geosyntec specializes in developing and applying sophisticated site investigation and characterization approaches, analyzing foundation behavior, altering the engineering characteristics of the soil and rock at a specific site through soil and rock improvement, and utilizing various proprietary and advanced site remediation techniques. These approaches ensure that our foundations and other subsurface structures can be constructed safely, adequately support the built environment, respond to increasingly unfavorable conditions, and withstand potential geohazards.

Practice Specialties

Geosyntec’s industry leading infrastructure and foundation engineers assist our clients with their most difficult geotechnical projects. For example, we developed a critical structure near Wilmington Harbor in Delaware for a client that required a practical, cost-effective solution. Our team developed an innovative foundation design and construction methodology included wick drains, embankment preloading, and mechanically stabilized earth walls. Our design not only exceeded our client’s expectations, but also saved them nearly $100 million when compared to more traditional proposals.

Our geoengineering practitioners distinguish themselves by developing a rapid understanding of the geological and environmental history of a site and using this knowledge to screen potential ground improvement and foundation technologies (e.g., wick drains, deep soil mixing, deep dynamic compaction, vibro replacement, and surcharging) to identify the most dependable and cost-effective approach. These screening-level studies gather optimized geotechnical information based on analyses tempered with practical experience to not only characterize the site, but also design dependable foundations. This approach has been very successful with our petroleum and chemical industry clients, particularly in association with large-scale capital projects in undeveloped areas. Our foundation design, offshore reclamation, and underwater slope stability services were utilized extensively in the development of a large LNG trans-shipment facility on the southwest coast of Africa for a multinational oil and gas client.

Advancing the State of the Practice

We have advanced the state of the practice through our senior practitioners writing and involvement with the technical design and construction manuals for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) focusing on foundation support systems, earth retaining systems, and seismic engineering. Geosyntec also provides geotechnical training instructors for the National Highway Institute (NHI) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and provided specialized training to state departments of transportation, contractors, and consultants regarding state-of-the-practice design applications. Our practitioners are active contributors and developers of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Specifications for bridge substructures, including foundations and retaining wall systems. Several of our practitioners have received ASCE’s highest awards for advancing the state-of-the-practice in geoengineering and others have authored geotechncial engineering guidance documents for the FHWA as resources for state DOTs.
