Structural Health Monitoring

Practitioners from Geosyntec have provided structural integrity assessment, risk assessment, and structural health monitoring services since the technology was initially introduced to the upstream oil and gas industry in the early 1980s.

In particular, we specialize in providing high-value engineering and consulting services that focus on unique and demanding structural problems. This focus is demonstrated by the comprehensive range of services provided by Geosyntec that help our clients address demanding platform structural integrity challenges.

The requirements for structural integrity assessments vary significantly from region to region and depend upon both the environmental conditions that present the dominant source of hazard and the regulatory regime that sets the standards for assessment and re-certification. Our staff have extensive experience with platform assessment and related design services in a number of major regions of the world, including the Gulf of Mexico, the Cook Inlet of Alaska, the North Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Northwest Shelf of Australia, and off the coasts of New Zealand and California.

Geosyntec's approach is focused on these issues with the objective of helping our client address all key sources of risk and to make effective decisions that are fully in-line with our client's ultimate business objectives. Achieving this goal requires a complete understanding of the effects of all sources of loading. Geosyntec's experience is comprehensive and includes projects where overall risks are impacted by:

  • Fatigue damage
  • Corrosion damage
  • Damage due to dropped objects
  • Damage due to vessel impact
  • Increased demand resulting from updated oceanographic criteria
  • Increased demand resulting from updated earthquake criteria
  • Facility expansion programs
  • Construction defects
  • Design deficiencies
  • Foundation damage due to blowout
  • Damage due to structural overload
  • Changes in operation
  • Seafloor subsidence

Geosyntec also provides inspection and survey planning services. The data collected from these inspections is used to assess the overall "as-is" performance of the structure to all sources of loading. Platforms can be subject to a wide range of environmental and accidental hazards. A thorough assessment of structural integrity requires a complete understanding of the hazard sources, the mechanics of loading and the structure's response to each characteristic loading condition.

In addition, Geosyntec's engineers have performed detailed stress analyses of components and structures in support of design and structural validation. Projects utilize any one of a number of finite element programs, including ABAQUS, ANSYS, LS-DYNA, or SACS. Analyses undertaken include tubular joint assessments to determine joint collapse loads; crack growth parameter calculations for high-temperature pipe work fracture analyses; analyses of pressure vessel lifting clamps; fatigue analyses of gearbox housings and locking pins; and the thermo-mechanical analysis of aircraft transparencies.

A coupled analysis approach has been developed in cases where the boundary conditions to a problem are poorly defined. A detailed stress model is included within a global model that correctly represents the transfer of loading from known conditions. For linear static cases, this reduces to a sub-structure analysis. In non-linear cases that involve contact and plasticity, sub-structuring is not possible and the coupled analysis often becomes the only reliable way to correctly transmit boundary loading.
