A robust justification for the design of safety-related structures at nuclear facilities usually requires detailed structural analysis to evaluate the performance of critical regions of the structures during design basis events and to demonstrate acceptable performance with a high degree of reliability. Geosyntec is trusted by design houses, operators, and regulators worldwide to carry out analysis of complex geometric and material nonlinearities under the most demanding load cases and combinations: dynamic, seismic, blast, impact, fracture, fire, and thermal transients. Our analyses and assessments for clients may be deterministic, carried out against prescribed design basis events, or probabilistic, where we determine the reliability or inelastic energy absorption capability using methods such as fragility analysis and pushover techniques.
Geosyntec is currently applying our engineering substantiation and independent technical assessment experience to help clients ensure safety in the new generation of nuclear power plants. As an example, we recently completed a structural assessment of an International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Neutral Beam Design Integration (NBDI) residual ion dump cooling arrangement, using elastic and elasto-plastic finite element analysis. The results enabled us to recommend design improvements to ITER, which reduced localised stress levels. Providing specialist technical support to clients with projects such as ITER, and overcoming engineering challenges, is helping to make nuclear fusion power a reality.
