Integrated Water Resource Management Planning

Effective management of developed and undeveloped watersheds and stormwater runoff by public and private entities is a complex task from the scientific, regulatory, and policy perspectives.

Proper planning, design, and implementation of stormwater and other pollution controls, such as wastewater treatment, are needed to ensure that such controls are cost-effective, achieve desired benefits for the community, and comply with evolving local, state, and federal regulations.

Many of our clients face new regulations or policies in their communities that are not tailored to site-specific conditions or that rely on overly conservative assumptions. Or, in other cases, clients may wish to undertake more sustainable practices voluntarily. Collecting the right data to make informed decisions in either case often is critical to avoid unnecessary expense.

Securing the funding needed to implement integrated water resource management programs can be difficult. Having a firm that helps define and communicate the environmental and economic benefits of proposed controls, as well as their uncertainties, can be critical to gaining acceptance from elected officials, government agencies, and community stakeholders.

Our clients include developers, cities, utilities, state agencies, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and non-governmental organizations. Many of our projects involve planning efforts at the site-level to watershed scales, often in partnership with key groups of stakeholders in a community.

Our personnel help shape the state of the practice via joint research and project work with civil engineering faculty at outstanding academic institutions. We are continuously involved in original research, development, and application of emerging techniques and technologies.

As a result, Geosyntec is recognized for facilitating the transfer of technologies from academia to commercial and public use. For instance, our professionals have been a critical and ongoing part of an award-winning team maintaining the International Database on Urban Stormwater BMP Design and Performance for the American Society of Civil Engineers and U.S. EPA. Our practitioners are key contributors to the new Agricultural BMP Database, a resource we helped the Water Environment Research Foundation develop.
