Stream and Lake Restoration Studies and Design

Geosyntec's water and natural resources practice maintains a multidisciplinary staff of water resources engineers, wetland specialists, stream geomorphologists, and biologists with extensive experience in planning, assessment, and restoration for surface waters and other natural resources.

In many cases, both in urban and rural locations, geomorphic, water quality, and ecologic impacts have already occurred to various types of aquatic resources — from streams and rivers, to lakes, wetlands, estuaries, and tidal marsh systems. Here the collaborative efforts of our scientists and engineers regularly provide comprehensive assessments and evaluations of the degree of impairment and provide practicable restoration or rehabilitation solutions designed to be sustainable and adaptive within the current or anticipated watershed and regulatory setting.

The core of our river restoration philosophy is to create solutions engineered for nature by designing with nature. The first, and perhaps most important, step of this approach is to meticulously observe. Process defines form, whether physical, chemical, or biological. Therefore, process mapping is the key to designing for the complex ballet of ecology, fluvial geomorphic process considerations, hydrologic, hydraulic, and engineering elements that must be factored in to every river restoration project.

Our clients often want projects successfully ushered from concept stage to the final post-construction walk-through. Collaboration of Geosyntec's river restoration design team and construction services group ensure that all project phases are efficient and accessible for our clients. Our design teams are backed by extensive capabilities to provide complex hydraulic/hydrology/computational fluid dynamics modeling, river engineering, permitting, plan development, fluvial geomorphic analysis, sediment assessments and modeling, and ecological assessments, all to support the formulation and validation of river restoration planning and design.

In addition, Geosyntec's expertise in fluvial geomorphology and stream restoration is an essential part of the firm's water and natural resources management practice. Our fluvial geomorphic restoration staff has the leading certification in this discipline, Rosgen Level IV in Natural Channel Design. We also have significant project experience with other stream geomorphic assessment and bioassessment methods, including Wildland Hydrology's Natural Channel Design (Rosgen), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Rapid Bioassessment Protocol (RBP), Unified Stream Assessment (USA), and the Rapid Stream Assessment Technique (RSAT). Our project experience in both geomorphic assessment and stream restoration includes a wide variety of climates, locations, and land uses across the United States.

We provide geomorphic field assessment/monitoring; Rosgen stream classification and natural channel design; sediment transport and scour analysis; sediment budgets; slope stability analysis; floodplain mapping; and designs and specifications for stream restoration and best management practices. Our project teams include Certified Floodplain Managers, Certified Professionals in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), Certified Professionals in Surface Water Quality (CPSWQ), Certified Lake Managers, and Certified Fisheries Professionals.
